My mother taught at a cooperative preschool for more than 20 years. She was gentle, cheerful and encouraging. Everything a preschooler (or daughter) needed. On Thanksgiving, we would unwrap the porcelain turkey shaped salt and pepper shakers and she would task me and my sister with the job of making place cards. We would get out 3 x 5” index cards (which my mom used to hand write recipe cards to share), magic markers, glue and head out to the yard to look for embellishments. Dried Queen Anne’s Lace, tiny pinecones from tall Michigan spruces, orange leaves still left un-raked were our favorites.

Last summer my sweet sister-in-law Lynne retired from teaching music (30 years) and gifted my mom’s home made book (more index cards) entitled, “Finger Plays.” She had one for every season.  Here are two she would sing with her students.

Sleep little seed so brown and small,

Sleep little seed in the chilly Fall,

Sleep little seed in the cold, cold snow,

Then in the Spring you’ll start to grow.

and…

The turkey is a funny bird

His head goes wobble, wobble.

And al he says if jus one word,

Gobble, gobble, gobble.

Find a tiny friend and share these with them this lovely Thanksgiving season.

Enjoy your friends and family this month.
