High School Poets Recognized
Each year, high school students all over the state are encouraged to enter the Georgia Poet Laureate’s Prize competition. Original poems are submitted by students and judged by Georgia’s poet laureate, Judson Mitcham, and the Georgia Council for the Arts. A Milton High school student won last year’s competition, and junior Dagmawit Adamu continued Milton’s winning streak for 2018. Winners and finalists were honored at the Governor’s Mansion. The Georgia Council of the Arts received more than 200 entries this year, with the first place prize going to Ms. Adamu of Milton High, as well as two finalists from Johns Creek High. Congratulations to these writers.

The Surgery Center for FGM
A newnon-profit, multi-disciplinary practice devoted solely to victims of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) has opened in Johns Creek. The founder and Medical Director, Dr. T. Wayne Bloodworth, is a cosmetic surgeon and gynecologist, who trained in Paris with the physician pioneer of reconstructive operations. The World Health Organization estimates 500,000 victims of FGM reside in the US with 3 million new cases worldwide annually. Dr. Bloodworth saw many existing advocacy groups working to prevent future victims, but not enough practitioners to provide needed care. This realization started him on his journey to open this office with a team of physicians, surgeons, psychologists and psychiatrists collaborating to outline a physical and emotional care plan for each patient. “What motivates us is hearing, ‘I feel whole again,’ from our patients after getting their corrective surgery,” says Dr. Bloodworth. Senior class president, Roby Riordan, notes: “Being in YMSL over these last four years taught me many things. The main lesson is that it’s important to give back through philanthropies, however nothing is more important than the lifelong bond you create with your mother.”
The Alpharetta chapter collectively volunteered more than 4,000 hours since April.
