Food. Water. Denim. Let’s get back to the essentials.
Whether it be the perfect pair of jeans or a funky new backpack, there’s nothing like returning to school with an elevated style. I present to you the return of the eighties: denim, denim, denim! As history tells us, this fashion garment dating all the back to the 1800s is here to stay. Lee, Levi’s, and Calvin’s audience shifted from the farmer down the street, to the bad boys who hung out after school, to anyone who calls themselves an American. In the 1950s through the 1960s, denim was associated with youth rebellion, therefore not accepted into conventional places such as schools, restaurants, and offices. Today, denim jeans skirts, jackets, and hats are seen everywhere! When planning this photo shoot, I was eager to incorporate denim’s rich history placing my subjects in front of a vintage-like car in the streets of my summer haunts. This setting conveyed a modern, yet dated feel. From their outfits to their expressions, I wanted to express how denim made my models feel. Let’s be real, it’s a great day when you find a pair of jeans that fit just right! I held back when telling Emma and Alex how to pose. In this particular shoot, the clothes didn’t dictate the ways in which to pose. The models were encouraged to be themselves, wearing the clothes rather than the clothes wearing them. After the shoot, Alex explained that “denim is so versatile! It’s easy, comfortable, and sexy!” Both girls agreed you can “dress it up or down”. I loved photographing two diverse personalities. Denim brought out their inner beauty: something that differentiates from person to person. Given that denim is timeless, you can pull pieces from local thrift stores or a parent’s closet to create your own unique look. Denim adds “flare” to any style. This year wear denim, and wear you!
