November 2016 Around Town

Covenant House Sleep Out

The Sleep Out is a fundraising and awareness campaign. In November, brave individuals will head outside in cities across North America, carrying sleeping bags and cardboard to serve as their beds. They lay on the sidewalks in 15 cities, looking up at Covenant House shelters where young people are safe and warm inside. Last year, these leaders raised more than $6.5 million to continue the vital work of Covenant House. Nearly 2 million kids in America will face homelessness this year. Perhaps their greatest poverty is that they are ignored and forgotten. Show them that they are not alone! “Sleeping out in the cold for one night was the smallest of sacrifices for me, but it gave me a powerful perspective about what our homeless youth have to deal with every single day. I will never forget sitting side-by-side with the Covenant House Georgia youth, and listening to their individual stories of heartbreak, courage and optimism,” says Sandy Douglas, President, Coca-Cola North America. The last day for registration is November 14 at

All of the team members at Elite have a vested interest in giving back to the community where they both live and work. As part of their continuing community partnership initiatives, their ribbon cutting ceremony was a fund raising event for Family Promise of Forsyth County, raising over $1,000 towards the charity’s new office space. Meet at Barnsley

Construction has begun on a new inn and conference center for northwest Georgia’s award-winning Barnsley Resort. Originally built as an opulent estate in the 19th century, the grounds have been transformed into a world-class resort.  Offering an additional 54 guest rooms and suites, the three-story Inn at Barnsley Resort will complement the resort’s relaxed English-inspired village and cottage-style accommodations.  With more than 10,500 square feet of indoor space and 8,350 square feet available outdoors, the Georgian Hall Conference Center will host corporate meetings, weddings and other special events in a picturesque location in the resort’s historic district. The resort will remain open throughout the expansion process, with an anticipated opening date of fall 2017.

Straighten Up (And Feel Better For It)

Revolution Chiropractic focuses on Structural Correction. Structural chiropractors take an engineering approach to the spine. They not only want their patients to feel better, but want them to see the evidence that their spine has changed for the better. Instead of using subjective measures like feel or touch to locate spinal problems, they use precision x-rays, a 3D structural analysis, and a digital analysis to identify structural abnormalities in the spine. Our associate editor had a state-of-the art analysis at this year’s AJC Health Fair and said, “It’s not only super cool, but a really comprehensive way to see how your body and spine are aligned!” In the same way a house with an uneven foundation can cause secondary issues like cracked walls, creaking floors and roof issues – a shift in the structure of the spine can lead to secondary conditions like migraines, neck pain, low back pain, vertigo, pinched nerves, numbness/tingling, shoulder problems and abnormal posture.
